Abstract

Parallel capacitor have been many used for reactive power compensation in electric power distribution system. Parallel capacitor placement with no appropriate size and location often cause bus voltage excess their limit and also increase power losses. Therefore, the operation cost becomes bigger. The aim of this research is to select the optimal size and location of parallel capacitor, in this case capacitor bank, to reduce power losses as well as to minimise the cost of operation. Exact method is used to find the location and size of parallel capacitor which will be placed at power distribution system buses. MATLAB software is used to make a computer program. Badai feeder is used as power distribustion test case. The results of this research shown that installing the capacitor bank with size of 2550kVAR at bus 18 reduce the most maximum in power losses. But installing capacitor bank with size of 2400 kVAR at bus 20 is the most optimal reducing the cost per year.
